Our Favorite Materials for Durable, Cost-Effective Construction

We believe that high-quality construction begins with the right materials. Our goal is to build homes and additions that stand the test of time while being energy-efficient and cost-effective. Over the years, we’ve worked with many products, and we’ve developed a preference for materials that deliver superior durability, performance, and long-term value. Below, we’re sharing insights on some of our go-to materials: mineral wool, blown-in cellulose, and ZIP R-Board.

1. Mineral Wool: Superior Insulation and Fire Resistance

Mineral wool is one of our favorite insulation materials, and for good reason. Unlike traditional fiberglass batts, mineral wool provides excellent thermal resistance while offering additional benefits such as fire resistance and pest deterrence. Since mineral wool doesn’t support combustion and has a high melting point, it enhances the safety of any structure.

Another key advantage is its soundproofing capability. Mineral wool is denser than other insulation options, which helps dampen noise between rooms or from outside the home—a crucial factor for comfort in today’s modern homes. Additionally, because it’s made from natural stone and recycled materials, mineral wool aligns with sustainable building practices, making it an eco-friendly choice.

2. Blown-In Cellulose: Eco-Friendly and Cost-Effective

Blown-in cellulose is another material we frequently use for its excellent insulation properties and cost-effectiveness. Made primarily from recycled newspaper, cellulose is treated to be fire retardant and pest resistant, offering a green alternative to traditional fiberglass insulation.

This material fills gaps and cavities more effectively than batt insulation, reducing air leaks and improving overall energy efficiency. For homeowners looking to upgrade their insulation without a massive budget, blown-in cellulose is a smart choice. It also has a lower embodied energy compared to other insulation types, meaning its production has a smaller environmental impact.

3. ZIP R-Board: Pre-Attached Insulation for Superior Thermal Performance

At McNamara Contracting, we often use ZIP R-Board, a sheathing system with pre-attached insulation available in R6 and R9 ratings. This product not only provides structural sheathing but also offers a continuous blanket of insulation across the entire home, significantly reducing thermal bridging.

By minimizing thermal bridging—where heat escapes through framing elements—ZIP R-Board enhances the overall energy efficiency of the building envelope. The pre-attached insulation simplifies installation and ensures a more consistent thermal barrier, which is crucial for meeting and exceeding the 2021 IECC energy code requirements in Massachusetts’ Climate Zone 5.

Why We Prioritize Durability and Cost-Effectiveness

Our philosophy at McNamara Contracting is simple: build homes and additions that last. This means selecting materials that not only perform well but also offer long-term value. Materials like mineral wool, blown-in cellulose, and the ZIP system help us achieve these goals by:

  • Reducing maintenance needs: Durable materials mean fewer repairs over time.

  • Improving energy efficiency: Better insulation and air sealing lead to lower energy bills for homeowners.

  • Enhancing comfort: Quality materials result in quieter, safer, and more comfortable living spaces.

Conclusion

Choosing the right materials is critical to delivering projects that meet the high standards we set at McNamara Contracting. Whether it’s the thermal performance of mineral wool, the eco-friendliness of blown-in cellulose, or the all-in-one efficiency of the ZIP system, we believe in using products that provide the best combination of durability, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
